3 Stocks Under $10 Making Big Moves

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- At Stockpickr, we track daily portfolios of stocks that are the biggest percentage gainers and the biggest percentage losers.

>>5 Hated Earnings Stocks You Should Love

Stocks that are making large moves like these are favorites among short-term traders because they can jump into these names and try to capture some of that massive volatility. Stocks that are making big-percentage moves either up or down are usually in play because their sector is becoming attractive or they have a major fundamental catalyst such as a recent earnings release. Sometimes stocks making big moves have been hit with an analyst upgrade or an analyst downgrade.

Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits. If you time your trade correctly, combining technical indicators with fundamental trends, discipline and sound money management, you will be well on your way to investment success.

>>5 Rocket Stocks to Buy for May Gains

With that in mind, let's take a closer look at a several stocks under $10 that are making large moves to the upside.

Aeropostale

Aeropostale (ARO), together with its subsidiaries, operates as a mall-based specialty retailer of casual apparel and accessories. This stock closed up 3.9% to $4.96 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $4.78-$5.03

52-Week Range: $4.30-$17.10

Tuesday's Volume: 2.58 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 4.15 million

From a technical perspective, ARO spiked sharply higher here and broke out above some near-term overhead resistance at $5 with lighter-than-average volume. Shares of ARO tagged an intraday high of $5.03, before the stock closed just below that level at $4.96. The near-term trend for ARO looks to be reversing into an uptrend from its more prolonged downtrend that the stock was stuck in over the last six months. Market players should now look for a continuation move to the upside in the short-term if ARO manages to take out Tuesday's high of $5.03 with strong volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARO as long as it's trending above some near-term support at $4.61 and then once it sustains a move or close above $5.03 with volume that hits near or above 4.15 million shares. If that move gets underway soon, then ARO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $5.43 to its 50-day moving average of $5.80. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ARO a chance to tag $6.50.

Vringo

Vringo (VRNG), together with its subsidiaries, develops, acquires, licenses, protects and monetizes intellectual property worldwide. This stock closed up 4.1% to $4 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $3.82-$4.03

52-Week Range: $2.61-$5.45

Tuesday's Volume: 2.26 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 2.76 million

From a technical perspective, VRNG ripped higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $3.82 with decent upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of VRNG within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if VRNG manages to take out Tuesday's high of $4.03 to some more near-term overhead resistance at $4.10 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in VRNG as long as it's trending above Tuesday's low of $3.82 or above more near-term support at $3.60 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 2.76 million shares. If that breakout materializes soon, then VRNG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.49 to $5, or even its 52-week high at $5.45.

Derma Sciences

Derma Sciences (DSCI) operates as a tissue regeneration company in the wound care market. This stock closed up 4.9% to $9.99 Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $9.50-$10.03

52-Week Range: $9.06-$15.51

Tuesday's Volume: 543,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 179,337

From a technical perspective, DSCI trended sharply higher here right off $9.50 with above-average volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last two months, with shares falling sharply from its high of $15.51 to its 52-week low of $9.06. During that downtrend, shares of DSCI have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, the short-term trend for DSCI looks ready to reverse to an uptrend and potentially trigger a breakout trade. That trade will hit if DSCI manages to take out Tuesday's high of $10.03 to some more near-term overhead resistance at $10.25 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in DSCI as long as it's trending above $9.50 or above its 52-week low of $9.06 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 179,337 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then DSCI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $11 to $12, or even $13.

Citigroup Posts Robust Earnings Again - Analyst Blog

Citigroup Inc. (C) reported impressive second-quarter 2013 earnings, with a positive surprise of about 6%. Earnings per share came in at $1.25 for the quarter, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 7 cents. Moreover, earnings were up 25% from the prior-year period, driven by higher revenues and lower net credit losses.

Notably, results in the reported quarter were impacted by credit valuation adjustment (CVA) and debt valuation adjustment (DVA). Including CVA/DVA and repositioning charges, Citigroup reported earnings of $1.34 per share.

For the second quarter, Citigroup reported net income of $4.2 billion, up 45% from the prior-year quarter.

Total provisions for credit losses as well as benefits and claims for the quarter were down 25% year over year at $2.0 billion. The improvement was primarily attributable to a 25% decline in net credit losses to $2.6 billion.

Performance in Detail

Revenues came in at $20.5 billion for the quarter, up 11% from the prior-year quarter. Excluding CVA/DVA and the Akbank loss in second-quarter 2012, Citigroup revenues rose 8% from the prior-year period to $20.0 billion. Moreover, the figure exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $19.6 billion. The rise was primarily driven by revenue growth in both Citicorp and Citi Holdings.

At Citicorp, revenues came in at $19.4 billion, up 11% year over year. Excluding CVA/DVA and the Akbank loss in the second quarter 2012, revenues were $18.9 billion, up 7% year over year. Higher revenues in the Securities and Banking and Global Consumer Banking businesses led to this rise. However, declining transaction services revenues were the downside.

Further, Citi Holdings reported revenues of $1.09 billion, up 16% year over year. Revenues came in at $1.07 billion (excluding CVA/DVA), up 17% from the prior-year quarter. The rise was primarily due to an increase in Local Consumer Lending as well as Special Asset Pool revenues, partially offset by a decline in Brokerage and Asset Managemen! t revenues.

Operating expenses at Citigroup were up 1% year over year at $12.1 billion. Increased expenses mainly reflected a rise in legal and associated costs.

Credit Quality

Citigroup's credit quality improved in the reported quarter. Total non-accrual assets declined 12% year over year to $10.1 billion. The company registered a 17% year-over-year fall in corporate non-accrual loans and a 9% fall in consumer non-accrual loans.

Citigroup's total allowance for loan losses was $21.6 billion at quarter-end or 3.4% of total loans, down from $27.6 billion or 4.3% in the prior-year period.

Capital Position

Citigroup continues to build its capital levels.

As of Jun 30, 2013, the company's Basel I Tier 1 Capital Ratio was 13.3% and its Basel I Tier 1 Common Ratio was 12.2%, both reflecting the Basel 2.5 rules. Moreover, Citigroup's estimated Basel III Tier 1 Common Ratio was 10.0%, up from 9.3% in the prior quarter.

As of Jun 30, 2013, book value per share was $63.02 and tangible book value per share was $53.10, up 1% and 2% respectively, from the prior-year period end.

Citigroup's end-of-period assets were $1.88 trillion, down 2% year over year while deposits of $938 billion were up 3% year over year. Citi Holdings' assets decreased 31% from the prior-year quarter level to $131 billion and represented merely 7% of the company's total assets at second quarter-end.

Performances of Other Large Wall Street Firms

The second-quarter earnings season kick started with Wall Street biggies such as Wells Fargo & Company (WFC) and JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM). Wells Fargo achieved the fourteenth consecutive quarter of earnings growth by reporting earnings of 98 cents per share.

Results improved from earnings per share of 92 cents in the prior quarter and 82 cents in the year-ago quarter. Additionally, it beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a nickel.

On the other hand, JPMorgan delivered positive earn! ings surp! rise of about 11%. The banking giant reported record earnings per share of $1.60, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.44 and the year-ago earnings of $1.21. With this, JPMorgan has delivered 6 consecutive positive earnings surprises.

Our Viewpoint

Following the volatile 2012 results, Citigroup began 2013 on a positive note and continued its impressive results into the second quarter. With the surge in revenues, on the whole, its profit level also surpassed expectations.

Citigroup's underlying franchises of the consumer businesses have remained strong but revenues have persistently been under pressure for the past several quarters. Considering the tepid economic recovery, we believe that robust top-line expansion will remain elusive in the near term.

Moreover, though Citigroup's strategy to shrink non-core assets will improve the valuation over time, the reduced Citi Holdings portfolio is expected to cause revenue challenges, partly limiting the upside potential of the stock. Additionally, with the thrust of new banking regulations, there will be pressure on fees and consequently, loan growth could remain feeble.

The clearing of the stress test this year showed how Citigroup's efforts to streamline its operations have borne fruit. Over the past few years, the company has been restructuring its business, making several layoffs, selling assets and trimming costs.

Citigroup has come a long way since 2008, when it had to take a bailout of $45 billion to survive the economic downturn. Through the stress test clearance and these restructuring initiatives, the company has shown the improvement in its capital position since 2008.

However, Citigroup should not be complacent with its capital enhancement initiatives. The company should continue to strive for improvement in its balance sheet and capital ratios.

Further, reduction in provisions for future losses and improved credit trends are expected to counter the negatives. One can cons! ider a co! mpany such as Citigroup to be a sound investment option, given its global footprint and attractive core business. It is also among the best reserved banks.

Moreover, Citigroup currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Among other Wall Street banking majors, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) is slated to report second-quarter earnings on Jul 16.

Inside China, a crash below the $50 barrier has unleashed a massive tablet boom. How are companies doing this? For one, local processor companies have created "good enough" designs that sell for a fraction of the price of high-end designs fromNVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA  ) andQualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM  ) . On its budget-priced Slate 7, HP used a design from Chinese chip designer Rockchip. When HP tried to sell its TouchPad tablet for prices starting at $500 in 2011, it used a Qualcomm design. Perversely, low-cost tablets are also cutting costs by salvaging memory from PCs.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]

Corning provides essential products used in the production process of smartphones, notebooks, tablets, and other related products to companies and consumers around the world. The company reported fourth-quarter earnings that left investors happy. The stock hasn’t made significant progress over the last couple of years and is currently pulling back. Over the last four quarters, earnings have increased and revenue figures have been mixed, which has left investors pleased with the company. Relative to its peers and sector, Corning has been a relative year-to-date performance leader. WAIT AND SEE what Corning does the rest of the quarter.

  • [By Chris Neiger]

Corning (NYSE: GLW  ) recently released its first-quarter results and although earnings were higher than expected, revenues fell short. The company is in a solid position in the display technology field and enjoys some hefty margins in the sector, but the glaring problem for Corning is its lack of materialized potential and its overdependence on display technologies.

Among holdings in which Bridgewater Associates increased its stake were Micron Technology (MU) and Corning (NYSE: GLW) . Micron shares have more than tripled over the past year and are near a 52-week high. Micron has been making some smart moves, such as buying the Japanese company Elpida, which has made Micron the world's second-largest DRAM maker. The new company has twice Micron's previous memory capacity, more pricing power, and a bigger relationship with Apple. Micron Technology recently announced a new, higher-performing processor architecture that's likely to compete with Intel offerings. Micron's recently reported fourth quarter was solid, topping expectations. With its forward P/E ratio near 10, many still see great value in the stock, and some investing legends have been buying.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 wireless telecom player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Partner Communications (PTNR), a telecommunications company, provides cellular and fixed-line telecommunication services in Israel. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 29%.

If you take a look at the chart for Partner Communications, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways for the last month, with shares moving between $7.28 on the downside and $7.96 on the upside. Shares of PTRN are bucking the overall market weakness today as the stock starts to move within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PTNR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.80 to $7.85 a share and then once it clears its 52-week high at $7.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 107,303 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PTNR will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $10 to $12.20 a share.

Traders can look to buy PTNR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $7.38 to $7.28, or below its 50-day at $6.97 a share. One can also buy PTNR off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Financial success in retirement requires more than just smart money management. It should also include an analysis of how you're going to spend your money to get the most bang for your buck, say two top national experts on consumer buying trends.

Retirees need to avoid spending pitfalls such as making too many bargain purchases for things they don't need or turning shopping into their new full-time job, says consumer psychologist Kit Yarrow, 55, author of new book Decoding the New Consumer Mind. A professor of psychology and marketing at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Yarrow has interviewed thousands of consumers, including retirees.

People who are retired may also want to avoid impulse buying and make sure they have other ways to socialize besides shopping, says Paco Underhill, 62, author of What Women Want: The Science of Female Shopping and CEO of Envirosell, a retail-focused consumer behavior research and consulting firm.

Research shows that people ages 50 to 74 spend about 12% of their income on food, 9% on entertainment and 3% on clothing, according to a report from the non-profit Employee Benefit Research Institute. More than 40% of their spending goes to their home and home-related expenses, the analysis says.

Sometimes retirees end up cutting back on spending in one area, such as apparel, because they have so many other demands on their wallets, such as bills for cable, Internet access and cellphones, Underhill says. He understands people's lack of interest in buying new clothes as they get older. He says he owns "all the jeans, suits and ties I need for the rest of my life," but he's still willing to spend money occasionally on socks and undergarments.

Yarrow and Underhill offer these shopping tips:

1. Create a new budget. Retirement is a fresh lifestyle that deserves a fresh budget, and it starts with thinking about what's really necessary and what brings you joy, says Yarrow. Make a detailed list of essential and discretionary expenses, she says. That way you can enjoy shopping when it's appropriate and not get sideswiped by unanticipated expenses, she says.

"Many of the retirees I interviewed have the same structure of spending that they did when they were working," Yarrow says. "One of the shoppers I interviewed said that in retirement she continued to entertain the same way she always had, treating her guests to expensive, elaborate meals that took a big bite out of her food budget, until it dawned on her that she and her husband could have just as much fun hosting cookouts and casual events and use the extra savings for road trips."

2. Make a shopping list and stick to it. Much of the way stores are organized is to propose things that aren't on your list but you buy on impulse because you think you might need or want them Underhill says.

Don't shop when you're hungry or tired, he says. About 20% of produce purchases get thrown out because the food spoils before it's used, he says. Buy only what you need, and use the leftovers for soups, stews and smoothies before it goes bad.

3. Distinguish between shopping for necessity and for socialization. Some people use shopping as their main reason for getting out of the house to see other people, Underhill says. It's fine to get out once a day for some milk or vegetables, but realize that is fulfilling the need for socialization, not just the need for acquisition, he says.

Part of being a good shopper in retirement is not getting your needs mixed up, he says. If you need socialization, then "go to volunteer at the local hospital on a routine basis where you get to fulfill your social needs without going to spend money at the local Piggly Wiggly."

4. Don't let anxiety control your spending. "We're all more anxious today, and that anxiety is a bit more ramped up for retirees," Yarrow says. Anxiety affects people differently. For some it leads to an unnecessarily austere life. For others, anxiety is at the heart of impulsive, feel-better purchases and hoarding. For many shoppers simply being aware of how anxiety may be distorting their decisions helps, and so does waiting before making impulsive purchases, she says.

5. Be careful about bargain shopping. Consumers often use bargains for psychological permission to buy, Yarrow says. Sales allow shoppers to cave in to tempting purchases they might otherwise regret. "I've found that shoppers who are in the throes of bargain fever can become so focused on the thrill of getting the deal that they lose sight of what they're spending and often actually spend more than less bargain-oriented shoppers.

Hot Telecom Stocks To Invest In Right Now

"One consumer proudly showed me a closet stuffed with soaps, shampoos, disposable razors, mascara and other assorted health and beauty products — more than she could use in several years. She would have been better off, spent less money and enjoyed her purchases even more if she had purchased just what she needed, when she needed it."

6. Don't make shopping your new job. Some retirees have turned shopping into their new profession, Yarrow says. The act of selecting and choosing an item can deliver a sense of mastery and competence t! hat mimic! s a sense of professional expertise, she says. But for most people, the more they shop, the more they'll buy.

Frequent visits to the mall, Costco, Lowe's or trolling online for bargains is bound to result in finding new things you don't really need. Doing online and in-store research before buying is a smart move, she says, but browsing as a distraction from boredom or anxiety isn't.

7. Resell, bargain and barter. Retirees should use technology to sell things they're not using as well as search for the best prices, Yarrow says. "I know one retiree who has mastered the marketplace through technology. She negotiated lower rates for her cable, phone and exterminator contracts. She sold some designer handbags on a luxury resale website, and she purchased a new chandelier at a local store for 30% less than the marked price by showing the owner of the store an online listing on her smartphone."

Why a Client’s Job and Location Are Critical to Portfolio Building

There’s more to an investor’s total economic worth than stock and bonds, according to a new paper by two Morningstar researchers.

“Other assets, such as human capital, real estate and pensions, often represent a significant portion of an investor’s total wealth, but are not frequently considered when building portfolios despite the fact that they share common risks with financial assets,” David Blanchett, head of retirement research, said in a statement.

Blanchett and Philip Straehl, senior research consultant and portfolio manager, coauthored the study, which shows that industry-specific human capital, region-specific housing wealth and pensions have statistically significant exposures to certain asset classes and risk factors.

Investors should consider these factors when building portfolios, the authors assert. This would, of course, also apply to their financial advisors.

Through a series of optimizations, the researchers compared the asset allocation differences between portfolios that were optimized only for financial assets versus ones that considered total wealth.

They determined that the optimal allocation varied materially when vocation, location and pension benefits were considered, with average asset class differences exceeding 20%.

Blanchett and Straehl also found that given the bond-like nature of human capital (which they defined as the total economic value of an individual’s set of skills and talents), portfolios that incorporated this asset tended to have lower allocations to intermediate- and long-term bonds and higher allocations to large-growth U.S. equities and commodities.

They also found that investors who worked in the manufacturing, utilities and government sectors saw the largest changes to their optimal portfolios after the researchers factored industry-specific human capital into the asset allocation optimization.

Their total-wealth-optimized portfolios were significantly more aggressive than average, largely because of lower human capital volatility in these professions.

Housing wealth had less effect on the optimal asset allocation than industry-specific human capital, but still played an important role, according to the research.

Of the 10 cities studied, homeowners in Las Vegas had the largest changes to their optimal portfolios after the researchers factored regional-specific housing wealth into the portfolio.

Their total-wealth optimized portfolios were generally more conservative than average given the historically volatile Las Vegas housing market, and had larger allocations to high-yield and non-U.S. bonds as well as small-cap value equities.

Blanchett and Straehl found that because industry-specific human capital had such a significant influence on the optimal portfolio, younger investors who naturally had higher levels of human capital saw larger changes to their portfolios than older investors when total wealth was considered in the optimization.

“Each investor’s situation is unique, and his or her financial portfolio should reflect those distinct risk factors,” Straehl said in the statement.

For example, he said, a Texas banker’s human capital and real estate wealth are tied to the financial and energy sectors as well as to large-cap value stocks, so the banker would want to reduce exposure to those asset classes in his financial portfolio.

“Our findings have important implications for individual and custom target-date model portfolio construction, and suggest that techniques that ignore human capital and outside assets are insufficient,” Straehl said.

“A holistic definition of wealth is necessary to build truly efficient portfolios.”

Advisors' Opinion:

I wrote on bearings and velocity control products company Kaydon (KDN) in early March of this year, and I didn't see a lot of value at the time. As the year went on, that call looked worse and worse, as the stock climbed about 18% - well above the S&P 500, and well above industry peers/competitors like Timken (TKR) and SKF (SKFRY.PK). To top it all off, Kaydon announced this morning (September 5) that it had received and accepted a buyout offer from SKF valuing the company at $35.50 - some 45% higher than the price when I thought it looked only about 10% undervalued. So what did I get wrong here, and what can investors do to avoid a similar mistake?

Can Cutting-Edge Insulin Hold Off Cheap Generics?

The Motley Fool's health-care show Market Checkup focuses this week on diabetes, one of America's growing health-care concerns. There are two versions of this chronic disease, the more prevalent being type 2 diabetes, which makes up about 95% of all cases. Because of the overwhelming patient population, type 2 diabetes receives the majority of attention from Big Pharma companies.

Diabetes is no small problem. In 2010, one in 10 adults had diabetes, and more troubling, more than one in four senior citizens suffered from it. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death, and there are 2 million new cases in America every year, leading analysts to project spending on diabetes to approach $60 billion in just five years. And this isn't just an American problem: 370 million suffer from diabetes around the world.

Hot Oil Stocks To Invest In 2015

I checked my tracking portfolio for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) today and found every single one of the 30 member stocks trading up. On a day like this, the longer-term travails of the Dow's elite warriors often fade into the background. Maybe that's a good thing, in a backhanded kind of way.

Let me make my point through a few examples.

Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) is among the Dow's biggest winners today following the release of some high-performance chips and positive comments from a company executive. Intel's chief technology officer, Justin Rattner, says new CEO Brian Krzanich wants the company to "move faster," trading today's perfectionism for quicker release cycles and more post-release bug fixes. This new attitude should make Intel more of a contender in the rapidly moving mobile market, which is why investors cheered the comment with their wallets.

Today the Fed reported modestly rising inflation as homebuilders broke ground on more new sites in May, all of which points to high consumer confidence and a stabilizing economy. As a result, stocks in every market sector made gains, from banks and consumer goods to telecoms and oil stocks. Sixteen of the 30 Dow members are currently trading within 10% of their respective all-time highs -- and yet Intel, which had the dual benefit of good news and a buoyant market, isn't one of them.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jake L'Ecuyer]

Mechel OAO (NYSE: MTL) was down, falling 2.33 percent to $2.52 after the company appointed Senior Vice-President for Economics and Management Oleg Korzhov as its Chief Executive Officer.

  • [By Fede Zaldua]

According Citigroup's analysts its about time to start accumulating Mechel's (MTL) shares. The reason for the sharp upgrade (from sell to buy) was Mechel's recent deal with some of its creditors to ease part of the company's huge debt burden. More specifically, the Russian metals and mining company managed to seal a deal with the state controlled VTB Group through which it managed to get covenant holidays and a debt restructuring. That said, I don think Mechel is out from the woods and I do not think its time to buy the company's shares, even when the are down by 67% year-to-date (ytd).

Tallgrass Energy Partners (NYSE: TEP) is a midstream limited partnership that provides natural gas transportation and storage services in the Rocky Mountain and Midwest regions of the US. The partnership launched on May 13, 2013 and in late June increased EBITDA guidance above analysts’ expectations, causing units to climb nearly 21 percent by year-end. In December TEP reiterated guidance for 1.2x distribution coverage for the entire year. The partnership recently declared a distribution of $0.3150 per unit for the fourth quarter of 2013 – a 5.9 percent increase from the Q3 2013 distribution. TEP’s annualized yield based on the most recent distribution is 4.8 percent, its current EV is $1.28 billion and its total debt/equity (mrq) is 30.5 percent.

  • [By Robert Rapier] There were a half a dozen initial public offerings (IPOs) by master limited partnerships in the first half of the year, and all but one are now in the green while one has nearly doubled in value.

The first MLP IPO of 2013 debuted on Jan. 15. USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC), which I mentioned in last week’s issue, provides compression services for the oil and gas industry. Units have advanced 36 percent since the IPO, and at the current price yield 7.3 percent.

The day after the USA Compression Partners IPO, CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR) made its debut.  CVRR was spun off from CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), and both companies remain majority-owned by Carl Icahn. CVR Refining’s primary assets are two refineries located in Kansas and Oklahoma with a combined processing capacity of approximately 185,000 barrels per day (bpd). These refineries are strategically located near the major Cushing, Oklahoma shipment and storage hub, with easy access to discounted feedstock from the nearby Permian basin, as well as the Bakken shale and Canadian oil sands.

But refiners have struggled with diminished margins in 2013 because of a much lower Brent-WTI differential. After the recently concluded second quarter, CVRR declared a distribution of $1.35 per unit, bringing its per-unit distributions for the first half of the year to $2.93. At the same time, CVR Refining lowered its annual distribution target to a range of $4.10 to $4.80 per unit. This was lower than the outlook issued in March, when it foresaw annual distributions of $5.50 to $6.50. CVRR units slid on the news, and are presently trading slightly below the $25 IPO price. The lower end of the revised forecast implies distributions of $1.17 per unit in the second half of the year, for a forward annualized yield of 10 percent based on the recent $23.50 unit price.

SunCoke Energy Partners (NYSE: SXCP) was the third IPO to debut during a very busy third week of January. SXCP is the first M

Drilling activities in the oil and gas industry continue to move along a downtrend. Even after a small recovery during last week, the long-term trend is a smooth decline since 2011. Nonetheless, exploration activities have not eased at any one geography. And after exploration comes production, but first the well has to be drilled. Hence, drilling companies still experience a high demand for its services. Nabors Industries (NBR) is the largest drilling company, and specializes in onshore drilling. During the last week, the Peter Lynch earnings indicator continues to indicate the stock as a strong upcoming performer. Jim Cramer, host of Mad Money and former hedge fund manager, has also highlighted the stock future prospects. So, is this a good time for prospective investors with a long-term outlook to enter the business with a large holding?

Using this simple thesis not only makes the whole idea of LNG exports rather simple, it doesn't need to drastically change the way you think about the energy space already. For those who are a little more tolerant of risk, natural gas producers should look a bit more attractive. Low-cost producers like Ultra Petroleum (NYSE: UPL  ) and Exco Resources (NYSE: XCO  ) beat analyst expectations this past quarter because the small uptick in gas prices gave them enough room to profit. If we were to see an uptick in demand thanks to natural gas, then these companies could stand to profit greatly.

EXCO Resources (NYSE: XCO  ) is about to draw another shareholder payback out of the ground. The company has declared a dividend of $0.05 per share for its Q1. That nickel will be paid on June 28 to stockholders of record as of June 14. The amount matches the company's previous distribution, which was paid in late March. Before that, EXCO Resources had handed out $0.04 per share since September 2010.

Right now, natural gas spot prices are in the $4.00 range. For low-cost natural gas producers like Ultra Petroleum (NYSE: UPL  ) and Exco Resources (NYSE: XCO  ) , a $4 price for gas will be a welcome sight. Exco had written down so many assets because of low gas prices, the company expects profits as long as gas remains above $2.15. Once LNG exports do come on line, an uptick in natural gas prices is expected, but not one that is so severe. More importantly, companies like Ultra and Exco that deal exclusively with natural gas will not have to worry as much about wild price swings.
