Best Transportation Stocks For 2014

The Federal Aviation Administration released a statement Friday outlining a proposal to fine Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) $2.75 million for the airplane manufacturer's alleged failure to maintain its quality control systems.

The root of the dispute stems to September 2008, when Boeing revealed that its 777 fastener components didn't conform to the FAA's standards. From October onward, Boeing and the FAA began a back-and-forth investigation correspondence. The FAA alleges that Boeing continually submitted action plans but failed to follow through by agreed-upon deadlines. Only in November 2010 did the company fully address the issue.

"Safety is our top priority, and a robust quality control system is a vital part of maintaining the world's safest air transportation system," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in a statement. "Airplane manufacturers must take prompt and thorough steps to correct safety and compliance problems once they become aware of them."

Despite what can best be described as asoft economy, small cap trucking stocks YRC Worldwide, Inc (NASDAQ: YRCW), Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ: ABFS), Frozen Food Express Industries, Inc (NASDAQ: FFEX), Saia Inc (NASDAQ: SAIA) and USA Truck, Inc (NASDAQ: USAK) have been trucking some pretty impressive returns since the start of the year. In fact, these small cap trucking stocks are up anywhere from 72% to 150% or so since the start of the year despite the slow economy. Certainly trucking stocks provide a good indicator of how the economy is doing, but might investors bejumping the gun by pushing up these trucking stocks?

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But one reason why trucking stocks have done so well is that investors are starting to see the potential for consolidation in the industry. Long-beleaguered YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW  ) apparently made an offer to buy out peer Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) in May, and although Arkansas Best rebuffed the bid, it still points to the efficiency gains that smaller trucking and logistics companies could gain from combining forces.

Nordic American Tankers (NASDAQ: NAT) was also up, gaining 10.05 percent to $8.87 after the Dow Jones Global Shipping Index showed strength throughout the session on Wednesday.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

Nordic American Tankers (NYSE: NAT  ) is presenting a calm sea to its stockholders by keeping its upcoming dividend level with the previous payout. The company has declared a distribution of $0.16 per share of its common stock for its Q1, which its expects to hand out "on or about" May 14. It expects that the record date will be April 30.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another shipping player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Nordic American Tankers (NAT), an international tanker company that owns approximately 20 modern double-hull Suezmax tankers, including four newbuilding vessels. This stock is off to a slow start in 2013, with shares off by 7.7%.

If you take a look at the chart for Nordic American Tankers, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last month and change, with shares dropping from its high of $10.31 to its recent low of $7.65 a share. During that downtrend, shares of NAT have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of NAT have just started to bounce higher off that $7.65 low and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. This bounce could be signaling that the downside volatility for NAT is over at least in the near-term.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in NAT if it manages to break out above its 50-day moving average at $8.50 and then once it takes out its 200-day moving average at $8.63 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 1.01 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then NAT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9.89 to $10.31 a share.

Traders can look to buy NAT off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $7.65 a share. One can also buy NAT off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

    Equities Trading DOWN
Shares of Nordic American Tankers (NYSE: NAT) were down 10.08 percent to $7.98 after the company announced the pricing of follow-on offering.

Hot Shipping Companies For 2014

A few months ago, Ivor Braka called me to ask if he could visit my office. Ivor is the older brother of a high school friend I haven't seen or heard from for many years. Ivor's family for many generations had been unusually successful in a variety of businesses. As a result, his family has become among the most prominent in the small, middle class, Jersey Shore, beach town where I grew up. Although I could not recall having spoken to Ivor since 1961, when I graduated from Asbury Park High School, I invited him to lunch.

When Ivor visited, we spoke principally about his family's business interests. Under his entrepreneurial leadership, the value of his family's assets had grown materially. The assets for which he is now responsible comprise interests in real estate in New York and other gateway cities around the world; international banking; and, most recently, shipping. I asked him about his staff of advisors and how he achieved the expertise I believed was necessary to invest in such a diversified group of businesses. "Like you, I invest in people," he began. "I invest with people in whose skills I am confident and whom I know well. In most cases, we also knew their grandparents well. If I am uncomfortable with a potential partner's grandparents' ethics, integrity and character, we don't invest," this successful entrepreneur told me.

EnteroMedics Inc. was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc (NASDAQ: OREX), like Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc (NASDAQ: ARNA), EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ: ETRM) and VIVUS, Inc (NASDAQ: VVUS), is a speculative small cap obesity drug stock that has the potential for coming up with the next big thing in the treatment of obesity that is increasingly a global problems. I should mention that we have recently added Orexigen Therapeutics to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio as an extremely speculative biotech bet because itslead obesity drug candidate has the potential to beapproved by September 11th of this year.

  • [By John Udovich]

On Tuesday, small cap EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ: ETRM) soared 63.5% after reporting new clinical trial data for its Maestro system that is designed to control obesity, meaning it might be time to take a closer look at the stock along with the performance of other small cap obesity drug or treatment players like Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc (NASDAQ: ARNA), Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc (NASDAQ: OREX) and VIVUS, Inc (NASDAQ: VVUS).

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 health care player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is EnteroMedics (ETRM), which is engaged in design and development of devices that use neuroblocking technology to treat obesity, its associated co-morbidities and other gastrointestinal disorders. This stock has been hit hard by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 59%.

If you take a look at the chart for EnteroMedics, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern $1 to $1.01 a share. Following that bottom, shares of ETRM have started to rip higher and trend back above its 50-day moving average at $1.08 a share with strong upside volume flows. This move is quickly pushing ETRM within range of triggering a big near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ETRM if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistances levels at $1.14 to $1.19 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 584,986 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ETRM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.37 to $1.47 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ETRM a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from February that started above $3 a share.

Traders can look to buy ETRM off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $1.08 a share, or below more key near-term support at $1 a share. One can also buy ETRM off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

  • [By Ted Cooper]

Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) returned 146% in stock price increases and dividends over the last five years. That's an average of nearly 30% per year. Clearly, investors who owned Philip Morris for any significant length of time during the last five years made out pretty well. Unfortunately, two new developments have emerged to make future returns less certain. All Philip Morris investors need to know about these two things before deciding whether to hold or sell their stock.

  • [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]

There are definitely concerns for Phillip Morris, which include decreased market share in many areas and poor debt management. However, up until this point, Phillip Morris has done a good job rewarding its shareholders. While history usually repeats itself, that not necessarily an all-positive in this case. Phillip Morris didn hold up well in 2008/early 2009. If a similar environment were to present itself again, then Phillip Morris wouldn be a top option regardless of the impressive yield. In the meantime, Phillip Morris is an OUTPERFORM.

Top 5 Penny Stocks To Watch Right Now

The selling in JC Penney (JCP) continued this morning–only to be reversed as bargain hunters pushed the stock higher.

AP

Susquehanna’s Christopher Jacobson looks to the options market for where shares of JC Penny could be headed:

…we revisit the option-implied probability exercise to see what May 2015 options in JCP can tell us about expected moves in the stock between now and then….despite the fact that shares are already down meaningfully, the options market continues to price in the potential for further meaningful downside. For example, the May options appear to price in roughly a ~25% probability that shares are trading below the $4 level by that time.

Belus Capital Advisors’ Brian Sozzi, meanwhile, offers a visual portrait of J.C. Penney’s identity crisis:

Unfortunately for JC Penney, its logo identity has gone missing right along with its free cash flow. There is no consistency, rather an array of facelifts on display in the store that reflect failed attempts to revitalize a business that operates in a super competitive, low margin arena. If a company logo is meant to connect a consumer to a brand promise…then JC Penney doesn deliver…

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is China Recycling Energy (CREG), which engages in the recycling energy business, providing energy savings and recycling products and services. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up a whopping 166%.

If you take a look at the chart for China Recycling Energy, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $1.67 to $1.66 a share. Following that bottom, shares of CREG have started to uptrend strong and move back above its 50-day moving average. That uptrend has now pushed shares of CREG within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in CREG if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.80 to $2.85 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 95,671 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CREG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $3.50 to $4 a share.

Traders can look to buy CREG off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $2.32 a share, or near more support at $2 a share. One can also buy CREG off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Best Performing Companies To Own For 2014

Navigating the ups and downs on Wall Street is no easy chore, even forseasoned market veterans. So why do so many investors, especially self-directed ones, strive to time the markets when there is a plethora of evidence that suggests the odds are clearly against them?

The simple answer is greed and laziness; that is to say, countlessinvestors would prefer to pick and choose the securities that are poised to go up the most in a given year rather than roll up their sleeves,do some good old fashioned research, formulate a long-term strategy, and be patient [see also Market Timing the Best and Worst S&P 500 Trading Days].

After all, would you rather sit and wait on your diversified portfolio to steadily increase in value over the course of many years, or would you rather use your crystal ball to cherry pick the best performing assets each and every year?

Why Cherry Picking Assets is Less than Ideal

Don’t even bother answering the lastquestion because the reality of the situation is that you don’t have a crystal ball (and neither does your financial advisor). Consider the table below (click to enlarge) compiled by the Novel Investor which showcases the annual returns since 2000 for a variety of major asset classes. More importantly, note the light gray box labeled “AA” in each year, which is representative of a well-balanced portfolio that is comprised of all the other assets that are listed:

The ETFs and funds held up on Monday:

JPMorgan Alerian MLP Index ETN (NYSEArca: AMJ) was down only 0.3% at $46.86, versus a 52-week range of $42.18 to $49.31. Volume was 1.1 million shares versus an average of about 628,000. ALPS Alerian MLP ETF (NYSEArca: AMLP) closed down 0.45 at $17.57, versus a 52-week range of $16.75 to $18.36. This ETF traded more than 3.1 million shares, up from an average of about 2.85 million shares. The closed-end fund of Kayne Anderson MLP Investment Company (NYSE: KYN) even managed to rise by 0.26% to $38.70 against a 52-week range of $33.11 to $40.22. Its volume was also almost 300,000 shares versus an average volume of closer to 218,000 shares.

It still seems more than interesting that the investment community did not pound the rest of the sector in sympathy with Boardwalk. This Boardwalk MLP still has a $3.1 billion market cap, even after getting cut almost in half. Usually investors try to tie in peers when one implosion is seen versus others. It seems as though they are trusting that negative natural gas exposure here is not going to spill over into the rest of the sector, and maybe not even spill over into the price of units in its more direct peers.

The biggest problem with the fund is that while it yields an attractive 7.5 percent annually based on the most recent quarterly distribution, the total expense ratio is presently an astronomical 4.4 percent. This is bound to be a drag on performance over the long run (although it still potentially offers an attractive short-term play). As a result, my preference for a long term investment in and IRA would be to own an exchange-traded note (ETN) based on one of the Alerian indices that I reviewed recently in Navigating the Universe of MLPs. There are several to choose from, including the JPMorgan Alerian MLP Index ETN (NYSE: AMJ), which presently yields 5 percent and has an expense ratio of 0.85 percent.

Best Performing Companies To Own For 2014: J. W. Mays Inc.(MAYS)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] is trading around book value your next step is to figure out how book value is calculated.

The reason a company trading below book value is interesting has to do with accounting. In the U.S., you don mark up the book value of land and many other potentially valuable assets just because you have evidence like an appraisal, comparable sale, etc. that the market value is now higher than your original cost.

So, there will be situations where knowing how a company accounts for its assets and knowing the stock trades for less than book value can help direct you to companies selling for less than they are worth.

DreamWorks is a movie studio. So it is using a rather subjective estimate of the ultimate revenue a movie will produce. It is then amortizing the cost of the movie as revenue comes in to the company in proportion to the percentage of revenue this represents relative to expected total revenue the movie will produce.

For very old movies, it actually a little different. And for flops it different. DreamWorks can write off flops. And it can expect the ultimate revenue for a movie to be higher to the extent such revenue comes more than 10 years after the film release.

In other words, DreamWorks has to fully amortize a movie within 10 years and disregard the value an 11-year-old movie might have.

This is explained in a note to the company 10-K. It is very important for Ben Graham-type investors to read all these notes carefully but especially the notes on depreciation and amortization:

Once a film, television special/series or live performance is released, capitalized productions costs are amortized and participations and residual costs are accrued on an individual title basis in the proportion that the revenue during the period for each title (urrent Revenue bears to the estimated remaining total revenue to be recognized from all sources for each title (ltimate Revenue. Consider the rupture of an Enbridge (NYSE: ENB  ) pipeline, which discharged roughly a million gallons of bituminous crude into Michigan's Kalamazoo River in June 2010. Though three years have passed, the cleanup effort still isn't over. Enbridge employees and state and federal environmental crews continue to test the river, where sheen and clumps of oil still linger. The company reported a 4% year-over-year decrease in its first-quarter net income, partially because of the escalation of cleanup costs related to the spill, which are now approaching a whopping $1 billion.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more OSI Systems (Nasdaq: OSIS  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong OSI Systems's competitive position could be.

Top Tech Stocks To Own Right Now: Facebook Inc (FB)

Facebook, Inc. (Facebook), incorporated in July 2004, is engaged in building products to create utility for users, developers, and advertisers. People use Facebook to stay connected with their friends and family, to discover what is going on in the world around them, and to share and express what matters to them to the people they care about. Developers can use the Facebook Platform to build applications and Websites that integrate with Facebook to reach its global network of users and to build personalized and social products. Advertisers can engage with more than 900 million monthly active users (MAUs) on Facebook or subsets of its users based on information they have chosen to share with the Company, such as their age, location, gender, or interests. It offers advertisers a combination of reach, relevance, social context and engagement.

Products for Users

The Company products for users are free of charge and available on the Web, mobile Web, and mobile platforms, such as Android and iOS. It launched Timeline in September 2011, as an enhanced and updated version of the Facebook Profile. Timeline allows users to organize and display the events and activities that matter most to them, enabling them to curate their memories in a searchable personal narrative that is organized chronologically. Users choose what information to share on their Timeline, such as their interests, photos, education, work history, relationship status, and contact information, and users can control with whom each piece of content is shared on their Timeline. The Facebook News Feed is the core feature of a user homepage and is a regularly updating list of stories from friends, Pages, and other entities to which a user is connected on Facebook. It includes posts, photos, event updates, group memberships, app updates, and other activities. Each user News Feed is personalized based on his or her interests and the sharing activity of the user friends.

Facebook is a photo upload! ing service on the Web. Users can upload an unlimited number of high resolution photos, create photo albums, and share them with their friends or any audience they choose. Users can also upload and share videos. Users can set specific privacy settings for each of their photo albums and videos, making them visible to everyone, or only to certain friends. Users can arrange their photos, add captions, and tag people in a photo or video. Tagging allows users to identify a person in a photo or video as one of their friends. Its messaging products include email, chat, and text messaging. Groups are shared Facebook pages for groups of users to discuss common interests. Lists allow users to organize their friends in order to filter the stories shown in their News Feeds and reach or exclude specific people when they share on Facebook. Through Events, users can organize gatherings, manage invitations, and send event notifications and reminders to their friends. From the Events page, users can create a new event, check out upcoming events of interest to them and their friends, and view previous events.

Through Places, users can share their location and see where their friends are. They are able to see if any of their friends are nearby. Users can also check in to Places to tell their friends where they are, tag their friends in the Places they visit, or view Comments their friends have made about the Places they visit. Using Subscribe, users can sign up to receive public posts in their News Feeds from other Facebook users of interest, such as celebrities, thought leaders, and other public figures. Ticker is a live stream of the real-time activities of a user friends and the Pages and other entities to which the user is connected. On the top of each Facebook page, a highlighted icon is displayed to users when there is relevant and new information available to them, such as a new friend request, a new message from a friend, or an alert that the user has been tagged in a photo posted by a friend.

A Facebook Page is a public profile that allows anyone, including artists, public figures, businesses, brands, organizations, and charities to create a presence on Facebook and engage with the Facebook community. A Page owner can connect with interested users in order to provide updates, answer questions, receive feedback, or otherwise stimulate interest in the owner messages, products, and services. When a Facebook user likes a Page, the Page owner has the opportunity to publish stories to the user News Feed on an ongoing basis. In addition, when a Facebook user Likes or Comments on a post by a Page owner, that user action may be shared with the user friends via News Feed to drive awareness to a wider circle of users, increasing the Page exposure, recognition, and engagement. The Company does not charge for Pages, nor does it charge for the resulting organic distribution. As of March 31, 2012, there were more than 42 million Pages with 10 or more Likes, including Harvard, Lady Gaga, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Starbucks, and Boo (the World Cutest Dog), as well as millions of local businesses.

Products for Developers

The Facebook Platform is a set of tools and application programming interfaces (APIs) that developers can use to build social apps on Facebook or to integrate their Websites with Facebook. As of March 31, 2012, more than nine million applications and Websites were integrated with Facebook. Some of the elements of the Facebook Platform include open graph, social plugins, payments, applications on Facebook, desktop applications, mobile applications and platform-integrated Websites. The Open Graph is a set of APIs that developers can use to build applications and Websites that enable users to share their activities with friends on Facebook. Social plugins are social features that developers can easily integrate with their Websites by incorporating a single line of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) code.

Facebook provides an o! nline pay! ments infrastructure that enables developers to receive payments from users through a secure system. The Company has designed its Payments infrastructure to streamline the buying process between its users and developers. Its Payments system enables users to purchase virtual or digital goods from developers and third-party Websites by using debit and credit cards, PayPal, mobile phone payments, gift cards or other methods. Applications on Facebook run within the Facebook Website. The Facebook Platform has also enabled new types of social applications on Facebook beyond games to facilitate social sharing and discovery of music, news, television programming, and everyday interests, such as cooking, fitness, and travel. Developers can also build desktop apps that run on the operating system of a personal computer and offer experiences that are integrated with the Facebook Platform. The Facebook Platform for mobile has enabled developers to create engaging mobile applications that integrate with Facebook social and personalization capabilities. Websites can integrate with Facebook using social plugins, such as the Like button or design more deeply integrated social experiences built around users and their friends.

Products for Advertisers and Marketers

Facebook offers products that enable advertisers and marketers to leverage its combination of reach, relevance, social context, and engagement. When creating a Facebook ad, advertisers can specify a title, content, image, and destination Web page or Facebook Page to which a user is directed if he or she clicks on the ad. Advertisers can further engage their intended audiences by incorporating social context with their marketing messages. Social context includes actions a user friends have taken, such as Liking the advertiser Facebook Page. Ads with social context are shown only to a user friends, and the user privacy settings apply to social ads. It offers a range of ads with social context, from an ad with a sing! le Like b! utton to its Premium Ad paired with social context, which allows advertisers to highlight the interactions of a user friends with a brand or product.

Sponsored stories enable marketers to promote the stories they publish from their Facebook Page to users who have connected with the Page or to amplify the distribution of stories users are already sharing that are relevant to their marketing efforts. When advertisers create an ad campaign with Facebook, they specify the types of users they would like to reach based on information that users chose to share about their age, location, gender, relationship status, educational history, workplace, and interests. Advertisers choose to pay for their ads based on either cost per thousand impressions (CPM) on a fixed or bidded basis or cost per click (CPC) on a bidded basis. Facebook ad analytics enable advertisers to gain insights into which ads were displayed and clicked on. These analytics help advertisers make modifications to their ad campaigns. Advertisers with Facebook Pages can also view the number of users who Liked and Commented on their Page and a newly introduced metric, People Talking About This, which shows how many stories about their brand are being created and shared.

The Company competes with Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Cyworld, Mixi and vKontakte.
