5 Best Medical Stocks To Own For 2014

Background of the Proposed Spin-Off

On November 14 Kimberly Clark announced the board of directors had authorized management to pursue a tax-free spin-off of the health care business, currently planned for 3Q, 2014. A spin-off would create a stand-alone, publicly traded health care company with approximately $1.6 billion in annual sales, 70% of which are derived from North America and net sales and leading market positions in both surgical and infection prevention products and medical devices (the maker of surgical masks, catheters, surgical gowns and drapes and other sterile supplies.) Robert Abernathy joined Kimberly-Clark in 1982 and is currently Kimberly-Clark Group President. He and 16,000 other employees would lead K-C Healthcare globally.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Falk had this to say, "While K-C Health Care has been part of our company since the 1970's, its strategic fit and growth priorities have changed over time and we now think that pursuing a spin-off makes sense for our shareholders. This move would allow K-C Health Care to optimize its performance and flexibility to pursue its own value-creation opportunities. A spin-off would also allow us to further sharpen our focus on our consumer and K-C Professional brands. This announcement is further evidence of our focus on creating shareholder value and how we use portfolio management to run our company." think the two companies will be better run as separate organizations rather than together,he added.

In the medical devices business (83% of FY 13 sales), the company competes with good health care companies such as Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), C.R. Bard (BCR) and ConMed (CNMD).

  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more CONMED (Nasdaq: CNMD  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong CONMED's competitive position could be.

  • [By James Brumley]

Shares of MDT stock have fallen 6% since their early January peak, but have been in an uptrend since late 2011 … one of the few stocks in the medical device world that has been rock-solid in a rocky environment.

    Medical Devices: ConMed Corp. (CNMD)

With a market cap of only $1.2 billion, ConMed Corp. (CNMD) isn’t exactly a household name. That doesn’t mean CNMD stock can’t be a potent addiction to a portfolio, though.

5 Best Medical Stocks To Own For 2014: bluebird bio Inc (BLUE)

bluebird bio, Inc., incorporated on April 16, 1992, is a clinical-stage biotechnology company, the Company is focused on transforming the lives of patients with severe genetic and orphan diseases using gene therapy. Gene therapy seeks to introduce a functional copy of the defective gene into a patient own cells, a process called gene transfer. Through gene transfer, a functional copy of the mutated gene is delivered to the patient cells, thereby correcting the underlying genetic defect that causes aberrant gene expression. As of December 31, 2012, the Company is conducting a Phase I/II clinical study in France evaluating an earlier generation of its LentiGlobin vector for the treatment of -thalassemia major and SCD. Initial proof-of-concept data from this study were published in Nature. During the year ended December 31, 2013, the Company plans to initiate an extension of this study under a revised protocol for LentiGlobin, which the Company refers to as the HGB-205 Study. The Company also plans o initiate a second Phase I/II clinical program in the United States for LentiGlobin, which the Company refers to as the HGB-204 Study, for -thalassemia major. In March 2013, the Company entered into a strategic collaboration with Celgene Corporation, or Celgene, to discover, develop and commercialize, disease-altering gene therapies in oncology.

Its gene therapy platform is based on viral vectors that utilize a modified, non-replicating version of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) virus, that has been stripped of all of the components required for it to self-replicate and infect additional cells. The HIV-1 virus is part of the lentivirus family of viruses, as a result of which the Company refer to its vectors as lentiviral vectors. Its lentiviral vectors are used to introduce a functional copy of a gene to the patient own isolated blood stem cells, called hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which reside in a patient bone marrow and are capable of differentiating int! o a wide range of cell types. HSCs are dividing cells, thus its approach allows for sustained expression of the modified gene as the Company is able to take advantage of a lifetime of replication of the gene-modified HSCs. Additionally, the Company has developed a cell-based vector manufacturing process that is both reproducible and scalable.

Adrenoleukodystrophy

Adrenoleukodystrophy is a rare X-linked, inherited, neurological disorder that is often fatal. ALD is caused by mutations in the ABCD1 gene which encodes for a protein called the ALD protein (ALDP), which plays a critical role in the breakdown and metabolism of long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA). Without functional ALDP, VLCFA accumulate in cells including neural cells in which they cause damage to the myelin sheath, a protective and insulating membrane that surrounds nerve cells in the brain. This damage can result in decreased motor coordination and function, visual and hearing disturbances, the loss of cognitive function, dementia, seizures, adrenal dysfunction and other complications, including death. ALD is divided into various sub-segments with three main phenotypes that impact brain function: CCALD (Childhood cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, AMN (Adrenomyeloneuropathy) and ACALD (Adult Cerebral ALD).

-thalassemia

-thalassemia is a rare hereditary blood disorder caused by a genetic abnormality of the -globin gene resulting in defective red blood cells (RBCs). Genetic mutations cause the absence or reduced production of the beta chains of hemoglobin, or -globin, thereby preventing the proper formation of hemoglobin A, which normally accounts for greater than 95% of the hemoglobin in the blood of adults. Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein in the blood that carries oxygen from the respiratory organs to the rest of the body. Hemoglobin A consists of four chains-two chains each of a-globin and -globin. Normally existing at an approximate 1:1 ratio, genetic mutations that impair t! he produc! tion of -globin can lead to a relative excess of a-globin, premature death of red blood cells. The clinical implications of the a-globin/-globin imbalance are two-fold: first, patients lack sufficient RBCs and hemoglobin to effectively transport oxygen throughout the body and can become severely anemic; and second, the shortened life span and ineffective production of RBCs can lead to other complications such as splenomegaly, marrow expansion, bone deformities, and iron overload in organs.

Sickle cell disease

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood disorder resulting from a mutation in the -globin gene that causes polymerization of hemoglobin proteins and abnormal red blood cell function. The disease is characterized by anemia, vaso-occlusive pain crisis (a common complication of SCD in which there is severe pain due to obstructed blood flow in the bones, joints, lungs, liver, spleen, kidney, eye, or central nervous system), infections, stroke, overall poor life and early death in a subset of patients. Under low-oxygen conditions, which are exacerbated by the red blood cell abnormalities, the mutant hemoglobin aggregates causing the RBCs to take on a sickle shape (sickle cells), which causes them to aggregate and obstruct small blood vessels, thereby restricting blood flow to organs resulting in pain, cell death and organ damage. If oxygen levels are restored, the hemoglobin can disaggregate and the RBCs return to their normal shape, but over time, the sickling damages the cell membrane and the cells fail to return to the normal shape even in high-oxygen conditions.

Advisors' Opinion:

The role of the barge can't be underestimated. Barge receipts increased more than two percentage points year over year, and this is a great place for investors to look for opportunity. Companies with maritime resources benefit from this trend, as well as growth in exports. Three such companies that are worth a look are:

Kirby Corporation (NYSE: KEX  ) , which operates 30% of the coastal tank barges in the U.S. Oiltanking Partners (NYSE: OILT  ) , which has storage capacity of 12.1 million barrels and six deepwater docks on the Houston Ship Channel Martin Midstream Partners (NASDAQ: MMLP  ) , which operates a large fleet of inland barges and controls 31 marine terminals

These companies won't be the only winners, but they are a good place to start your research.

Other investors might wish that Pfizer would use some of its cash to acquire a few smaller companies. Protalix BioTherapeutics (NYSEMKT: PLX  ) has been mentioned as one possible candidate. 5 S&P Stocks That Could Make Huge Moves Soon

Be forewarned... this article isn't for the faint of heart. I'm going to be introducing five stocks that could make huge moves during this earnings season.

Whether those moves are up or down is hard to tell. The reason these stocks are liable to make such moves is because they are heavily shorted. Major news announcements usually have an exaggerated effect on heavily shorted stocks, and earnings announcements definitely qualify as a "major announcement."

I've scoured the markets for the most popular shorted stocks four times before. Over this time frame, the average stock that I've covered has moved 15% on news of its earnings.

Here are this quarter's five stocks from the S&P 500 to look out for:

Cliffs Natural Resources
Cliffs is a company with a two-pronged business: mining for iron ore, and metallurgical coal. As if negative earnings and a lot of investors betting against it wasn't enough, the company also recently disclosed that CEO Joseph Carrabba would be retiring -- although the market actually liked that announcement.

The core of the problem for Cliffs is the fact that iron-ore prices have dipped, and it was forced to write down $1 billion for its Consolidated Thompson acquisition. These two factors combined made the company slash its dividend and raise equity capital. This month's earnings should help investors see if there's any turnaround in sight for the company.

U.S. Steel
America's largest steel producer has seen better days. Over the past 12 months, the company has just barely been profitable -- pulling in $0.07 per share. And 2013, as a whole, is expected to be unprofitable for the company.

Top 5 Transportation Stocks To Buy For 2015

Like Cliffs, U.S. Steel has had to contend with low commodity prices, as well as slower growth and credit problems in China -- one of the major buyers of steel. But the company is also in a highly cyclical industry and, by 2016, analysts actually see U.S. Steel earning $4.20 per share -- making today's price look cheap for long-term investors.

Pitney Bowes
It's hard to argue that a lot of people might bet against a company that has historically relied on the United States Postal System -- and paper mail delivery, in general, for the bulk of its revenue. Such is the case with Pitney Bowes, which sells machinery and software to help streamline communications via mail.

Revenues have been consistently falling for years, and the company announced earlier this year that its dividend would be cut by 50%. Some might say, "Well, the stock is so low it has to be a buy, right?" To which I would say that any stock can go to zero -- and when it does, you lose everything.

Frontier Communications
Frontier is a company in the process of trying to make itself over. Traditionally, the company had relied on revenue from landlines in rural areas of the United States. But, as more and more people cut their landlines off in favor of cell or smart phones, that business is disappearing.

In its place, Frontier is trying to package telephony along with Internet service to a growing number of business clients. If it is able to solidify a customer base among these businesses, the company's 10% dividend yield could be safe, and the stock a good investment. But if things don't work out during this transition, expect big drops.

First Solar
This stock seems to make my list of possible big movers every quarter. First Solar designs and manufactures solar panels to generate clean energy. The company has fallen on hard times over the past few years, as competition from China drove prices down for solar panels significantly.

But recent statements from Dr. Ernest Moniz -- the Department of Energy Secretary -- have offered some hope. He said that the solar industry could come into its own sooner than expected, and First Solar also said it had to stop taking orders until late 2013 because its production facilities can't meet demand.

If you'd like to, I suggest reading up on another little-known stock that has a 23% short interest. The company holds the key to the explosive profit power of the coming "no choice fuel revolution." Luckily, there's still time for you to get on board if you act quickly. All the details are inside an exclusive report from The Motley Fool. Click here for the full story!

Advisors' Opinion:

Assuming it delivers on its outlook for 2014, its current free cash flow yield is a very enticing 20%. This isnt a growth stock, but its brands still possess hidden value. As cheap stocks go, its very attractive.

Cheap Stocks to Buy: Aegon (AEG)

Its not often that you can buy a $19 billion market cap for under 10 bucks. Aegons a Dutch insurance company thats had a rough ride over the past few years, and its stocks suffered as a result. In the late ’90s AEG stock traded around $60 — it hasnt been anywhere close since. However, its got some good assets that should bear fruit in the years to come. Aegon has 12,000 employees in the Americas doing business primarily under the Transamerica brand, which has been a part of AEG since 1999.

5 Best Penny Stocks To Invest In 2015

5 Bes t Penny Stocks To Invest In 2015: Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund(CFP)

Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund is a closed-ended equity fund of fund launched and managed by Cornerstone Advisors, Inc. The fund invests funds investing in the public equity markets of the United States. It invests in stocks of companies operating across diversified sectors. Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund was formed on April 26, 2007 and is domiciled in the United States.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:

Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP  ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the m! arket, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM  ) and its concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.

When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.

Forget Ford! This Hidden Auto Play Is a Dividend Giant

The auto industry has been in full celebration mode lately, as the most recent figures from Ford and General Motors suggest that the recovery from the near-death experience that U.S. automakers suffered during the financial crisis is largely complete. Yet, by looking beyond the automakers themselves, investors can find an even more lucrative stock that has delivered better long-term returns, and consistently raised its dividend every year for well over half a century.

Genuine Parts (NYSE: GPC  ) is hardly a household name, but you'll find it among the largest producers of auto parts in the industry, and its NAPA Auto Parts stores are widely known among vehicle owners and mechanics alike. Unlike Ford and GM, you'll also find Genuine Parts on the list of Dividend Aristocrats, where admission is determined by whether a company can manage to boost its dividend payouts to shareholders every single year for at least a quarter century. Only a few dozen stocks make the cut, demonstrating their staying power even through tough times. Let's take a closer look at Genuine Parts to see whether it can use recent success in the auto industry to sustain its long streak of rewarding dividend payouts to investors.

What's up with Genuine Parts lately?
Genuine Parts hasn't hesitated to share its wealth with shareholders lately, both in terms of its dividend, and through share-price increases. The stock has soared more than 30% so far this year as the company benefits from the overall strength in the industry.

What's interesting, though, is that historically, auto-parts makers are seen as relying on the lack of success among automakers. After all, new cars don't need parts nearly as often as older cars do, and when Ford and GM perform well, their customers don't have to rely as much on Genuine Parts or competitors AutoZone (NYSE: AZO  ) and Advance Auto Parts (NYSE: AAP  ) for replacements. Yet, even though Advance's 15% gain, and AutoZone's 20% rise year to date, aren't quite as substantial as Genuine Parts, they still signal a paradigm shift in the way investors look at the industry, perhaps recognizing that for every new car sold, there's usually a used car that gets traded in, and so good news for Ford and GM sales might actually translate into more business for the parts industry.

Another part of the explanation might come from Genuine Parts' other businesses. Office products and electronics haven't been big growth areas lately, but the company's sales of bearings and hydraulic and pneumatic components to industrial users give it valuable diversification from its auto-part focus. Strong relationships with its commercial customers have helped the company sustain its momentum, and even though the company missed estimates in its most recent quarter, CEO Tom Gallagher believes that the remainder of the year should improve from its poor first-quarter performance.

GPC Dividend Chart

Genuine Parts dividend data by YCharts.

As you can see, Genuine Parts hasn't been stingy with its dividends lately. After a series of tiny increases in the early 2000s, the company has accelerated its dividend growth, with increases of 10% in 2012, and almost 9% earlier this year. Yet, with the company only paying out about half its earnings in dividends, Genuine Parts' earnings growth seems more than ample to produce further increases in dividends in the future.

When will Genuine Parts raise its dividends again?
Genuine Parts just raised its dividend in March, so it would be extraordinary for the company to boost its payout again before 2014. But as long as prospects in the industry keep improving, investors should look for good things from Genuine Parts.

Another promising area for the auto industry is China, which is already the world's largest auto market -- and it's set to grow even bigger in coming years. A recent Motley Fool report, "2 Automakers to Buy for a Surging Chinese Market," names two global giants poised to reap big gains that could drive big rewards for investors. Hot Construction Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Hot Construction Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Assa Abloy AB (ASAZY.PK)

Assa Abloy AB is a Sweden-based company engaged in the secure door opening solutions. It is organized into five divisions: Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), North and South America (Americas), Asia, Australia and New Zealand (Asia Pacific), Global Technologies and Entrance Systems. The EMEA, Americas and Asia Pacific divisions manufacture mechanical and electromechanical locks, security doors and hardware in their respective geographical markets. The Global Technologies division operates in the product areas of access control systems, secure card issuance, identification technology and hotel locks. The Entrance Systems division is a supplier of entrance automation products and services. The Companys subsidiaries include ASSA Sverige AB, Timelox AB and ABLOY Holdings Ltd., among others. In November 2013, it acquired Ameristar Fence Products Inc, a manufacturer of ornamental fences and gates. In January 2014, it acquired IdenTrust. In February 2014, it acquired Lumidigm . Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Weighing Machine]

Domiciled in Sweden, Assa Abloy (ASAZY.PK) is the largest lock maker in the world with a global market share of nearly 12%. While the construction market has been difficult since the financial crisis, Assa has continued to increase revenue and operating profit every year since 2010 and is on track to do so again in 2013. While commercial construction has been subdued, the aftermarket (which represents ~70% of the total lock market) is driven by changes in tenancy, renovation, and extensions have not been very cyclical and provides the company with a steady stream of profits. Assa has been cobbled together through 150+ acquisitions since the early 1990s and while management has done a good job of rationalizing facilities, there remain opportunities to increase manufacturing efficiencies. Similarly, the company's back office is still running dozens of IT systems (as a result of acquisit! ions) but management plans to consolidate these over the next few years. Further, Assa rem ains an active consolidator of the locks industry - it should be able to add 5% per year to sales via acquisitions (as an aside, those interested in micro-caps should have a look at Securidev in France which trades at less than half the private market value Assa has paid for lock makers on average over the past decade). Having the highest margins in the industry, Assa is able to achieve significant synergies on acquired businesses and earn good returns on capital for its shareholders through M&A. Thus even in a difficult economy, we expect Assa will continue to grow its operating profit given its steady after market revenue, opportunity to improve results through cost cutting, and through value accretive M&A. While its shares are not cheap, at 19x earnings, shares could offer investors with a five year holding period and an 8-10% annualized return.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Lewis]

The telecom giant has a standing offer of $2.97 per share for the 52% of the company it doesn't already own. That comes in at a sharp discount to today's market price of $3.26 -- a number partially fueled by speculation that Clearwire is worth more than Spri! nt's offer, and also from a $3.30-per-share bid from satellite-television juggernaut DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) . One caveat to the Sprint deal, which must be very appealing to the Clearwire board, is immediate access to $800 million in financing -- money that would go straight to the company's 4G LTE buildout. The new network would give the company some much-needed cash flow, but it would come at the cost of an unappealing acquisition price.

  • [By Katie Spence]

As a writer for The Motley Fool, it's easy for me to be critical of companies -- that's my job. But watching million- and billion-dollar companies look past their bottom-line to help fire victims reaffirmed to me why there's more to evaluating a company than just finances. CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL  ) offered free call forwarding to fire victims. Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ  ) provided a $10,000 grant to The American Red Cross, offered one-to-one matching of employee donations, and set up a system in which Verizon wireless customers could donate $10 by texting, without a fee, STORM or REDCROSS. And unlike DIRECTV's initial response to a fire victim that resulted in widespread social-media outrage, DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) proactively issued a statement saying all equipment damage fees would be waived, fire victims could pause service, and there would be no reinstallation fees.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Until last week, it looked like Sprint would move forward with its deal with Japan's SoftBank, under which the Japanese bidder plans to give the U.S. carrier a massive infusion of capital in exchange for a 70% stake in Sprint. But DISH Network's (NASDAQ: DISH  ) offer last week to make a $25.5 billion bid for the entire company has thrown a wrench into the works, and investors are hoping for higher bids from potential buyers to sweeten the deal.

    Time Warner threats

AMC Networks plans to laun! ch the 10! -episode series Halt and Catch Fire this June. Dish Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) will transmit several Disney channels on an a la carte basis, threatening Time Warner's premium-cable-channel advantage. Time Warner has delayed the launch of Batman vs. Superman.

One dividend to rule them all
In this writer's humble opinion, it seems that Disney has a better shot at long-term outperformance, thanks to its ubiquitous brand recognition and a more diversified business model. The company is likely to wind up creating more film franchises with the launch of Marvel's new X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy comics series. Orlando's recent airport expansion project should also help lure a large number of new visitors to the legendary Disney World theme park. The company's combined properties seem more defensible than Time Warner's, which is the key differentiator in long-term investing for this type of industry. You might disagree, and if so, you're encouraged to share your viewpoint in the comments below. No dividend is completely perfect, but some are bound to produce better results than others. Keep your eyes open -- you never know where you might find the next great dividend stock!

No Monthly Jobs Report? What Will the Talking Heads Do?

monthly jobs report employment situation unemployment rateJ. Scott Applewhite/APPresident Barack Obama appears on a video monitor as he discusses jobs and the economy during 2010 event hosted by CNBC. WASHINGTON -- The latest victims of the government's partial shutdown: policy wonks, politicians and TV talking heads who are losing their monthly opportunity to dissect the jobs report issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The ritual unfolds every month: The jobs report comes out, and Wall Street panics or exults. Political advocates spin. And economic analysts crowd cable-TV to offer us their insights. It happens the first Friday of the month at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time. Except this Friday. The government's partial shutdown means the September jobs report is being postponed. The workers who produce it aren't deemed "essential," which is why they're among the 800,000 federal employees being furloughed. They aren't doctors treating wounded soldiers at military hospitals or air traffic controllers ensuring that planes take off and land safely. They're statisticians. Yet for a subculture of Americans whose professional lives are tied to the monthly jobs report, its absence may be disorienting. "Economists and journalists will have some withdrawal pains," suggests Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics and a fixture on cable-TV gabfests after the jobs reports are released. Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial and another regular television presence on the morning of the jobs reports, jokes that she won't have to get up so early Friday. Yet she'll feel the loss. The jobs report is a "flashlight into the dense forest of global economic information," Swonk says. "We've turned the flashlight off." Wall Street traders whose computers are normally primed to spring into action milliseconds after the report is issued will have to manage without it. "Most investors I talk to are taking a wait-and-see attitude," says Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank. "I don't think anybody is crying in their beer." Wall Street bases its buy-and-sell decisions on countless data -- from economic growth in the United States and abroad to corporate profits, manufacturing output and home sales. But the jobs report tends to occupy center stage. Job growth drives consumer spending, which fuels most of the U.S. economy. "The economic data everybody looks at all month long leads up to a day like Friday," says Jonathan D. Corpina, senior managing partner at Meridian Equity Partners. "Without having that core ingredient to your economic calendar, the dish really isn't going to be done." So can stock analysts just take Friday off? Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pa., mused, half-seriously, that he might as well head to his weekend place on the Jersey shore. "Employment Fridays are always an incredibly busy time for me," Naroff says. "This one is going to be strangely quiet." What will the cable financial news outlets, from CNBC to Bloomberg to Fox Business News, do Friday morning with no jobs report? CNBC issued a statement saying it's "still planning a big show on Friday" focused on the uncertainty from the shutdown and the "incomplete picture on where the jobs market currently stands." Friday's report was expected to show that the economy added 180,000 jobs in September, slightly more than the modest 169,000 in August. The unemployment rate was expected to remain at a still-high 7.3 percent. Without the jobs data, it isn't only Wall Street that will have to act without its usual information. The Federal Reserve will almost surely put off any move to slow its bond purchases when it meets later this month. The purchases have been designed to keep long-term borrowing rates low. A resolution of the shutdown would allow the government to eventually release the September jobs report. But Naroff is already worried about the October jobs report, set for release in early November. A prolonged shutdown would bar the government from doing the necessary surveys on hiring and employment. "Do they do it a week late?" Naroff says. "Do they just not do it? I don't know." Zandi says he'll grow alarmed only if a prolonged shutdown shuts off the flow of economic data for weeks. No one would know precisely how the economy is reacting to Washington's political standoff. "It's like flying a plane with few instruments." Zandi says. "You're able to do it for a while. But if you hit a storm, there's a good chance you'll crash." Still, important as the jobs report is, some find its coverage on cable TV to be overkill. Barry Ritholtz, chief investment officer at Ritholtz Wealth Management, calls it "the single most overanalyzed, overwrought, overemphasized data point in finance." Ritholtz notes that each month's job figure is later revised twice, sometimes sharply. "It's only a function of financial television and radio that have time to fill." Regardless, Zandi plans to be exactly where he is on every other first Friday of the month: speaking on a panel of experts on CNBC. "There's always something to talk about," he says.
