After a brief dip, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) has resurfaced above the break-even mark and sits at a small gain as of 11:30 a.m. EDT. Investors are unsure of the impact of some mixed data on the market this morning, with the numbers implicating a shift in both international and U.S. financial affairs. One sector in the Dow got another earnings boost this morning with an outsider continuing the trend of better-than-expected results -- lifting the whole group.

Retail sales data for June was released earlier this morning, showing only a slight rise of 0.4%. Though this result marks the third consecutive month of growing sales, the number missed estimates, which were double the actual growth. Though consumer income has been rising, as evidenced by earlier data releases, retail sales have lagged as consumer sentiment is still wary about the future of the economy. Last week's report on sentiment showed that most families are unsure of the progress the economy will make in the next six months, which may be a leading factor in why retail sales are still slow to take off.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jayson Derrick]
This morning, Ann (NYSE: ANN) reported its second quarter results. The company announced an EPS of $0.70, beating the consensus estimate of $0.69. Revenue of $648.70 million missed the consensus estimate of $664.54 million. Net income for the quarter fell to $32.7 million from $35.6 million in the same quarter a year ago as comparable-store sales fell 2.3 percent. The company noted that the quarter began on a positive note with solid momentum through mid-June, but softer traffic levels and a highly promotional environment ultimately had an impact on its bottom line. The company saw its gross margin rate decline 230 basis points to 52.4 percent, while its SG&A expense ratio fell 140 basis points to 43.9 percent. Ann issued guidance and sees its third quarter revenue to be $670 million. For the full fiscal year 2014 the company expects total sales to be $2.560 billion. Shares lost 3.32 percent, closing at $37.52.

Severe weather, weak traffic trends and a highly promotional retail environment have continued into 1Q, likely putting pressure on earnings and share prices for many companies in our sector. Retailers that have not yet reported 4Q earnings and therefore have not yet commented on 1Q trends are at risk, in our view. Given the exceptionally promotional and price competitive environment, we believe that estimates for some companies ([Aeropostale (ARO), Ann (ANN), Gordmans Stores (GMAN) and Tilly's (TLYS)]) do not reflect the pricing pressure likely in 1Q.

If the names Axxess Unlimited Inc. (OTCMKTS:AXXU) and MagneGas Corporation (NASDAQ:MNGA) ring a bell, it might be because yours truly posted some bullish thoughts on both names earlier this week. Although neither small cap stock had done everything they needed to do in order become a fully bullish trade at the time, both MNGA and AXXU have cleared those hurdles in the meantime. So, in case you forgot (or in case you missed the first look), an updated review of Axxess Unlimited and MagneGas is merited.

A week and a half ago, yours truly penned some bullish thoughts on Axxess Unlimited Inc. (OTCMKTS:AXXU). Not too many traders read that take, and/or if they did, they didn't seem to care. The response to the commentary was non-existent (good or bad), and there was no sudden rush to go out and buy AXXU. Today's second look may have a different outcome.

Even if you're one of the few reading this now, odds are good that you'd still never heard of Axxess Unlimited Inc. (OTCMKTS:AXXU) until the beginning of February. Prior to that, trading in AXXU was thin and uneventful. The evidence? Prior to February 4th, the average daily volume was less than 10,000 shares per day, and had been stuck right around the $0.20 mark since the middle of last year. Since February 4th, though, things have changed for the better. Since then, volume has been considerably stronger, and Axxess Unlimited shares have finally woken up and decided to forge ahead.

Wall Street had another rising day, with the Dow Industrials and the S&P 500 reaching new record highs. But one tech stock tanked and the momentum took a bunch of others in the sector down with it. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) closed 25 points higher, the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) added 8 points, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) was up 3 points. One of the top gainers on the S&P 500 was used car giant CarMax (KMX). Its share price zoomed higher by 16.5 percent with revenue and profits hitting record levels. The still lackluster economic recovery is causing many to drive off lots in used cars instead of new vehicles. And the hottest model over the past two years? The Nissan Altima. Automotive retailer AutoNation (AN), which runs new and used dealerships, also got a boost, rising more than 5 percent. It was a different story for software giant Oracle (ORCL), which was one of the S&P 500's biggest losers. Its stock fell 4 percent on sagging earnings. Social media stocks fell too. Pandora (P) was down 1.5 percent as was Groupon (GRPN), LinkedIn (LNKD) lost almost 1 percent and Amazon (AMZN) fell less than 1 percent two days after unveiling its first smartphone. But poor Radioshack (RSH). Its stock hit a new low, trading below a dollar a share for the first time after falling almost 10 percent. Since the beginning of the year the stock is down 64 percent. One analyst has a price target of zero on the stock. Ouch. (We hope you don't have that one in your portfolio.) And Darden's (DRI) earnings weren't very appetizing. Profits came in much lower than expected and guidance was weak. The stock fell 4 percent. It is selling its Red Lobster chain and trying to focus on revamping Olive Garden. Solar stocks had a bright day, though. Shares of SunEdison (SUNE) shone brightly rising 1.5 percent on news it was acquiring some solar farms in Massachusetts. Jin Lee/APAutoNation CEO Mike Jackson If you follow the financial media regularly, you will find daily predictions about the direction of the markets. Breakout, a daily blog on Yahoo Finance's website, is typical of what passes for financial information. On Sept. 6, Breakout's Jeff Macke featured Mike Jackson, the CEO of AutoNation (AN), as his guest. Jackson opined that the economy "has moved into a self-sustaining recovery." He may or may not be correct in that assessment, but relying on his views or the views of others claiming predictive powers is more akin to gambling than investing. Macke's program is no worse than what is dispensed by many of his colleagues in the media. The format is familiar to all of us: Intelligent people in positions of power and influence make rational-sounding statements about the economy, the direction of the market or the merit of a particular stock or fund. What's missing is any data indicating that their views are worthy of consideration, based on a history of accurate past predictions or demonstration of predictive skill (as contrasted with luck). There is ample evidence to the contrary. In a paper published in July 2010, three finance professors from Duke University and Ohio State University published the results of an extensive survey they performed. Each quarter from March 2001 to February 2010, they surveyed "top U.S. financial executives." They asked them to predict one- and 10-year stock market returns and also for their predictions of best- and worst-case outcomes. The data they gathered aggregated 11,600 S&P 500 forecasts. You would think the accumulated expertise of these executives would permit them to make fairly accurate predictions about a commonly used index such as the S&P 500 (^GSPC). The opposite was true. The authors of the study found no correlation between the estimates of these top financial executives and the actual value of the index. In fact, the correlation was negative. When they predic

In good company
McDonald's isn't the only fast-food company that's feeling the pinch at the moment. Burger King Worldwide (NYSE: BKW ) , Wendy's, and Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM ) (parent of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC) have all had their share of downward pressure in recent quarters. - [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]
Yum! Brands is a good company that still has a lot of potential going forward. Recent events might have presented an opportunity, but the bottom line is that the stock upward momentum has stalled and there are considerable headwinds. McDonald is stronger, and it offers a higher yield. McDonald also held up much better in 2008. Therefore, McDonald is still a better option than Yum! Brands.

All in all, even as competitor and Taco Bell operator Yum! BlueOrange Studio/Shutterstock One day out of 365, we pay homage to our sainted mothers. Those of us who are members of this long-suffering, uncomplaining, self-sacrificing class may get some soggy French toast in bed, (don't worry, kids; mom will clean up the kitchen), a chance to read in peace, or perhaps time to indulge in a long, hot bath. Bringing Home the Bacon If you really want to pay back mom for all she's done, get ready to pony up big. A card and some carnations (the official flower of Mother's Day, who knew?) just won't cut it. The cost of replacing mom as nurturer, nurse, cleaner and cook -- according to Insure.com's 2014 Mother's Day salary index -- would run you $62,985 a year, up from $59,862 in 2013. Breaking down the price of having someone else handle her various duties: Cooking and cleaning, $12,230 Child care, $21,736 Homework help, $7,290 Chauffeur, $5,672 Shopping, yard work, party and activity planning, finances, etc., $15,019 And my personal favorite, finding out what the kids are up to (paid in the equivalent value of a private detective), $1,036. Salary.com placed a higher value on moms in its 2014 Mother's Day salary survey, concluding that stay-at-home moms were worth $118,905 and working moms worth $70,107 (this does not include any paid salary from their job), with both groups putting more than 56 hours of overtime at home. These numbers are all up from last year's survey. Cooking It Up in a Pan Mom helps to pay for other things, too. In 2012, there were 10.3 million single U.S. mothers with children under 18, and one-third of women who gave birth in 2012 were single moms.
